Scottsdale International Film Fest Will Screen Weinstein, Amazon Movies

Ettinger starts the search for movies in January at other festivals in the U.S. and abroad. She starts actively pursuing films. At precisely the exact same time, five to seven programmers from different walks of life review the admissions.

“They also make sure that anything with high production values, a great plotline, or a unusual story told well is believed,” she states. “[The submissions] aren’t the standard Hollywood ending sort of movies, but they never leave you wanting. From July, we pretty much have what secured in.”

The festival’s 2017 edition counts Amazon Studios and that the Weinstein Company among its sponsors. The firms, which also have movies featured within the program of the festival, have come under fire after sexual misconduct by studio heads who have since abandoned the companies.

Harvey Weinstein was fired by the Weinstein Company. And Roy Price resigned from Amazon Studios.

Even as more people come forward to share stories of harassment and abuse, and executives now have distanced themselves out of Weinstein and Price, Ettinger is not eliminating the studios’ logos in the festival’s site — nor the movies The Upside and Last Flag Flying in your festival’s lineup.

“I’m one of the #metoo men and women,” she states. “I really don’t feel that if you are a girl who climbed up between the dawn of culture and just recently that you haven’t encountered some embarrassing situation, at the very least, either verbally or otherwise.

“We cannot eradicate immediately the humiliations and [other actions] these guys perpetrated on women. There are other men and women working at these companies, so I’m not likely to join the bandwagon and strip off the logos of our site or our advertisements because I believe it’s a disservice to people who still should earn a living.”

When asked if next year’s program could influence, Ettinger says she suspects when preparations for your 2018 festival start, that the Weinstein Company will exist in its present form.

This year’s title sponsor for the festival would be the Town of Scottsdale. As the event enters its 17th 15, that’s a point of pride for Ettinger. To her, it says a lot about the caliber and importance of the festival to the Phoenix suburb which they are prepared to support it with their grant dollars.

“I’m thrilled with how our community is starting to explode with arty offerings,” Ettinger says.

A Western called The Ballad of Lefty Brown will start the 2017 edition of the festival on Thursday, November 2.

The 1 film Ettinger really wants attendees to see is your Arabic-language movie In Syria. It revolves around a mom in Damascus who uses her flat to protect her family members and friends from the violence taking place outside.

“I cannot stress how much I adored this movie,” Ettinger says. “The acting is superb. The storyline is timely and present. It is a world that is perplexing at this time. This movie doesn’t do anything to undo the confusion, but it reminds one that the human condition takes a major overhaul.”

The Scottsdale International Film Festival is scheduled for Thursday, November 2, through Monday, November 6, at the Harkins Shea 14 Theatre, 7354 East Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale. Opening night tickets, including a reception, are $25. Individual screening tickets are $12 each. There are various discount vouchers available, but those must be purchased before 5 p.m. on November 1. To learn more, check out the festival’s site.

Amy Ettinger functions to put together the five-day program of that the Scottsdale International Film Festival. As the case of executive director, she has one aim in mind when organizing each year’s lineup: Surprise the audience.

“Artistically, it’s our aim which we’re able to discover the very best of what’s available and put it into this particular festival,” Ettinger says. “There are a lot of things to balance, but we’re firmly fixed every year to the maximum caliber of movie.”
