New Marvel film logo is a nostalgia overload for designers

As these were were treated to the preview for the forthcoming Thor: Ragnarok movie, yesterday was a significant day for lovers. The film, which is the 17th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, views Thor heading head to head with a different Marvel favorite, in what claims to be an epic confrontation, the Hulk.

Yet there is plenty for eagle eyed designers to get worked up about about. Interspersed through the preview is a distinguishing symbol layout and wordmark (see over) packaged with 80s appeal as well as the touch technique of well-known comic book artist Jack Kirby.

That is correct, the vague blob designs which can be found in in the rays smashing out from behind the symbol are a what supporters call the Kirby Krackle. This arty tradition signifies goes and cryptic energies back to the work on the Fantastic Four and Thor comic books in the sixties of Jack Kirby.

Along with this nod to Marvel tradition, the Thor: Ragnarok word mark is full of elements which have got couturiers pining for the earlier. When it is the glossy typeface that will not seem out of place on a Commodore 64 game, or the changeover impact that harks back to the Superman movies in the late 1970s and 1980s, there is lots to love.
