Actress Slams Superhero Movies As Cinematic Fracking

Are entertainment movies art, or something in between? For me, they may be somewhat artistic, but first and foremost they’re entertaining. If they don’t make me happy to be spending a couple of hours seeing them, they’re a waste of time. Plain and Easy.

I know that my view is not shared by everybody.

Among the people who disagree is Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster, who adores one of the most popular film genres available: the superhero film.

“Going to the movies has become just like a theme park,” Foster stated in a interview with Radio Times Magazine. More to the point, though, she states that like it’s a bad thing.

“Studios making terrible content so as to appeal to the masses and bankers is similar to fracking  — you receive the very best return right now but you wreck the ground.”

She added, “It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American people and finally the rest of earth.”

However, Foster fails to explain how people viewing the movies they want to view — pictures fans have been clamoring for — is ruining anything.

What folks like Foster fail to recognize is that folks don’t need to watch a film on any particular night. They choose their entertainment according to what seems entertaining and won’t disturb when they find nothing of attention playing. They view the movies they want to view and nothing else. If there weren’t superhero movies to watch, they’d possibly find something similar to watch –possibly the most recent action blockbuster — or they will stay home. The same is true of those who don’t enjoy superhero movies. They find something else or they don’t go to the pictures.

In other words, individuals select the entertainment they need. It’s liberty, pure and simple.

So how can this ruining anybody’s viewing habits?

If I had to hazard a guess, I would suppose Foster considers that when these superhero blockbusters weren’t there, folks would gravitate more to so called essential movies or films with more complexity. But, that’s not likely to happen. Maybe if someone were to balance that complexity with the things the majority of the moviegoing audience needs, it would work, but most movies won’t do this.

If Hollywood listens to the Jodie Fosters of this world, we’ll get the films that she believes we ought to eat, and then Hollywood is going to probably be in real trouble. In the end, should they fail to amuse me, then television, books, or video games will be more than delighted to do so. And guess where my period will go?

Foster is deluded if she thinks I would be alone in my exodus.

So here is a thought: Let’s stop griping about people who like entertainment for entertainment’s sake, mmmmkay?
